Depending on your worldview it is either an uplifting goal, or a demoralizing co-opt of an idea that is, in itself, an oxymoron. You decide.

P.S. I'm pretty sure they've used Bell Centennial, designed by Matthew Carter for use in the phone book. A lot more people are using that lately. The tipoff is those little cutouts where the Ns diagonal stroke joins the stems.

And P.P.S. I'm told by a British friend that Chiswick is pronounced "chissick", with a silent W. I was also told that Chiswick is very "swish".

I'm creating a poem of sorts by cataloging the ever-changing Friendly's sign. This time they've gone all "texty" and have different messages on each side of the sign. I'm not sure if they didn't have an "H" for Happy BDay, or if they want you to order appetizers. Thoughts?

Also, I promised to put up some student work, and I am in the throes of organizing it now! Soon, I hope!

At Attention

Getting attention like those furniture ads, but signalling another sort ending, this hand-made heartfelt notice at a ferry on Long Island refers to yet another well-known symbol: the flag at half mast. Flags at half mast everywhere on Shelter Island were a show of a community island banding together during a sad, sober time.

But it's a great name for a band.

There's just something so...bombastic, and summery, and, well...gross...about this signage.

And in deference to my Italian heritage, I feel I must register my complaint about pairing seafood with cheese/cheez.
