DUMBO day

Some shots out and about in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn. It was an especially good day for some very textured grafitti.
 

3-D-iti, or, Hunter Collage

I realize this freebie newspaper stand near Hunter College has been defaced, but the drawings, funny faces, and textures are amusingly artful. Move over Shepherd Fairey; there are guerrilla sculptors on the loose.




Doh? Are the skull and crossbones more message-full than artful? Or a trendy-ish appropriation?

The wall at Houston Street and the Bowery looked almost too chic last week, but I was excited to see that Barry McGee, who was featured in the wonderful film "Beautiful Losers" had a hand in the art. Even cooler were the process shots on the art collectors.com.

More Shepard Fairey

A sister site to the Houston street billboard, this "Post No Bills" by Shepard Fairey is over on 29th and Broadway. I love the layering, especially the bits with the Andre the Giant stencils. Some of it (I hate to say) looks like beautiful wallpaper.

Love among the trees

Some "classic" signage/grafitti found among the trees in the Frelinghuysen Arboritum, a lovely horticultural park in Morris County. I always wonder if these couples are still together.

Legitimized Street Art

The Keith Haring wall at Bowery and Houston has been replaced by a magical mural by two Brazilian brothers (twins) with the moniker Os Gemeos. The New York Times
reviewer overdescribed it, so I'll simply show some lovely details—along with folks on the traffic island snapping away. Can an inanimate object have a gaggle of paparazzi? As lovely as the new mural is, it doesn't have the power of the Haring.
