Sunny Brooklyn

Monday was the perfect day to run away to the newly opened sections of Brooklyn Park under the Brooklyn Bridge.

The railings featured some beautiful type and designs that echo the suspension cables of the bridge. They also cast lovely shadows along the pier.

We spotted what looked like a solar dumpster, but more research revealed that it is a solar-powered electric vehicle charging station built by the Beautiful Earth Group, a Brooklyn-based renewable energy company. According to their website, the station is the first solar-powered charging station in New York City and one of only a few in the world. Brooklyn Bridge Park will use the donated station to charge its electric service vehicles (EVs) using only the power of the sun.

Chim chim cher-oo

Form meets function: I don't know what the metal work on this chimney is called, but it sure looks nice. I imagine it's some sort of brace, but it makes a fabulous decorative statement as well.

Please don't play the piano, darling

A charming little note sits atop the artwork piano in this piece by Brent Green: Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then. Up only for another week at Andrew Edlin Gallery in Chelsea.

The artwork is an installation of a recreation of a house built by Leonard Wood, who kept building and building his house in the hopes that it would cure his wife.

Fascinating installation, and video installations features some music by the Sacred Harp Singers At Liberty Church (who are Shape-Note singers, fascinating if you don't know about it, click this link).
One of their songs appears on the Cold Mountain soundtrack.

The neighborhood has gone to the . . . frogs?

There's a show opening in Chelsea on October 22 by Olive Ayhens titled Nature/Architecture (up at Frederieke Taylor Gallery) and it's all about extreme interiors and exteriors. I'm wondering if these buildings are imaginary because I'd swear that, except for the giant frogs hanging about, this is the building that replaced the Whale of a Wash carwash across from Beth's BTD office!



Beth, can you confirm? Do you still have Whale of a Wash photos and its architectural replacement?

Lights and Other Interesting Materials

Nice NICE neon. The third shot reminds me of the lamp I brought to you from New Orleans—i.e. the one made from Mardi Gras beads that combined partying hearty with wacky functionality.

Speaking of New Orleans, Susan Neely, who's made gorgeous lamps from recycled materials PLUS designed and acted as contractor for a house in NOLA's Gentilly area, recently created constructions of another sort for a group show in NOLA at the BECA Gallery. Susan's work combines painting, construction, and found objects.









As a relative, I'm totally prejudiced in her favor, but I think Susan can do anything.
