Leaving a Mark

While I'm on a roll with equipment from back in the day, here's the rest of the signage for the Perkins store at 43 Elm Street in New Haven. One of the comments Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown made about the signs in Las Vegas was that they are huge physical objects. Here, in the city where they taught, you can see how the hanging sign was suspended from the building. Of course, this sign is much smaller than the ones in Las Vegas. Ironically, the typography in New Haven is just as visually cacaphonous (perhaps more so?) than the mega-signage in Vegas, both then and now.

Yes! These letters are so big out of their element on the ground. A couple of years ago on my way to BTD after a big windstorm I was the happy finder of a giant letter "R" that had blown off the Angelika Film Center marquee! I was surprised at how large it was...almost 2 feet high!
