Cheers for Chairs

As part of its Centennial Celebration, the AIGA is currently exhibiting Facing Forward, on display until April 4.  Jumping off from the Windsor-style chairs owned by founding members of the AIGA, selected contemporary designers or AIGA chapters have customized chairs donated by Blue Dot. The chairs by Jessica Hische—whose interlocking letterforms show the influence of her time at Louise Fili, Ltd.— and Marian Bantjes are particularly striking. One is spare, one is rich in detail. Both are typographically astounding.

Hurt that you weren't invited to participate? Don't worry. In the gallery AIGA has placed templates for making your own (tiny) chair. Once you've made your chair, you can post it on social media. Clever.
