A battery of DIY Type

I can't begin to imagine how many watches needed batteries replaced or how long it took to make this sign for battery replacements. "Watch battery change" has a certain imperative quality to it as well! This Bleecker Street (between Broadway and Crosby) shoe repair shop has been around so long that the sign was (hand) painted before area codes were necessary.

i wish they had a few more batteries so it would read "Watch Batteries Changed". Somehow I keep reading that sign as a missive to "watch" something!

I'm chuckling at your assumption that whoever made the sign thought about content and grammar. It's a very gnarly and gritty place where the shoemakers sport hats (liberally covered in shoe polish) made out of newspaper. I sorta like the unintentional message . . . .
