In June, when I saw the brilliant pairings that the brilliant pair Isabel and Ruben Toledo created for the Detroit Institute of Arts, I had no idea whatsoever that Isabel Toledo was battling breast cancer. I was simply charmed and awed by her/their work. Intelligence and joy emanated from their work. In retrospect, I see the somber aspects and wonder if Isabel Toledo foreshadowed her own passing. Rest in peace, Isabel Toledo. My condolences, Ruben Toledo. Such lame words for such forces.
