Stamped Out

A sign a day! I'm lovin' it. 2010 will be a great year. I'm with you.

Last year (December 26,2009), Pat and I went to New Haven to see the exhibit "What We Learned"" at the Yale School of Architecture. A tribute to the work done by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown in 1968 (sheesh! 1968!), the exhibit is a two-fer, with photos by Steven Izenour as well as a retrospective of VSBO's work. I love the way Venturi, Scott Brown and their students deconstructed signs. I'll post more on the exhibit, the book—both original and multiple editions in many languages—and Las Vegas (not to mention some of the signage in very non-Vegas New Haven) later in the year.

We had two amusing surprises on our way out of New Haven:
1. There were lots of aging shop signs in New Haven. The shot above is just one part of Perkins Rubber Stamps and Marking Devices. I wonder how well the store is doing these days.
2. Lured by a big sign for Super Duper Weenie at exit 24 on I-95, we tried to find the joint in the dark and the rain—with no success. We're navigationally challenged, as was Google maps on my i-Phone. We plan another assault at some point. Further online research indicates that the sign may well be much larger than Super Duper Weenie itself.

I find that Googlemaps is often wrong; I count on Mapquest when I really need to get somewhere. I'm looking forward to all the signage you've got stored somewhere.

That's funny. I found that Mapquest was irritatingly incorrect. I think the problem was with the speed of the iPhone connection. I'm amused that I've become frustated with online reception while in a car; not that long ago, a phone didn't come with so many expectations to fulfill!
